Insisting your Way to your Boss

The boss will always have the final say on anything. But that doesn’t mean that we don’t like anything the boss wants. There are ways of insisting what we want in certain business decisions and eventually persuade our boss that what we want is the right thing to do.

Credibility before the Talk

Before you go ahead and talk to your boss about your opinion on certain things, make sure that you are one of those guys that could command respect even without the higher position. You will notice that most of the persons that are listened to by the upper management are the ones who have been with the company for years.

The reason for them to listen to their ideas is that they have already built their credibility through the years and because of their loyalty to the company, they know the ins and outs of the business and has a good grasp of the business situation.

But even if you’re still new to the company, you can still have some credibility in presenting your side to your boss. All it takes is to properly present your ideas without being bossy. The challenge is that you don’t come out as someone that’s really aggressive.

Don’t Come Forward without a Solution

When there are some things that you don’t like in the process, you don’t just come forward and tell your boss about it. Before you start to complain, think of the solution or alternatives to that processes. Make sure that these processes are feasible or else you’re just wasting your boss’ time. Being problem oriented will never be beneficial to anyone.

The Collaborative Approach

If you are presenting a solution, don’t be a superhero and present yourself as the only one who could take care of this problem. Come up with a solution where everyone has to do something or achieve something. In any business situation, everyone has to contribute something. Another advantage of presenting a collaborative approach as a solution to the problem is that you are making the solution as realistic as possible. Your boss should be able to see the advantage of your solution and might do it your way.

Adapt your Boss’ Strategy

If you want to convince your boss, think like your boss. Your boss should have a specific approach in presenting a solution to the problem. Use this approach to formulate an alternative solution. Since you are using his strategy to come up with a different solution, you should be able to convince him or her that this is the right thing to do.

Don’t Walk Over Someone

If you have a great idea, don’t just go straight to the owner of the company. Present the information to your immediate supervisor first so that they should add some things or help you in presenting the idea. Think of this as a professional courtesy since you are just someone in the lower position with a great idea. With their help, you can persuade the boss and even get some commendation because of that idea.
