Smart Strategies in Proofreading Resumes

A single mistake in a resume will diminish your chances of getting hired. If you need to read and reread the resume for more than five times, do it. Being serious in your job application will always entail a required perfect grammar and spelling. Because of technology wherein misspellings are pointed out and corrected, there is practically no room for errors. You have to make sure your resume is more than just a rush detailed description of what you can do.

There are those who have developed a strategy on how to proofread their resumes. If you are still looking for that strategy, here’s a step by step approach to proofread your resume towards perfection.

1. Print your resume in colored paper – proofreading your resume in a computer is ok but the brightness and convenience will make you think your resume is just perfect. Printing your resume on paper will give you the chance to make notes on your resume. You will provide more than just simple grammar and spelling corrections as you provide additional ideas that will make your resume look better. Printing your resume in a colored letter will help you read the resume in a different manner. Even though you are planning to submit your resume online, printing your resume is highly recommended for speedier proofreading.

2. Give it time – after you have initially proofread your resume; leave it as it is for at least an hour or two. There are those who even give themselves a day or two before they go back to their resume for proofreading. The purpose of temporarily walking away from your resume is to gain a fresh perspective regarding your resume. Proofreading your resume again and again after writing them is very tiring that you might think you are reading but actually skipping words.

3. Reverse proofreading – reading your resume in a regular manner could be repetitive that you might miss out certain errors. Instead of reading your resumes in a regular manner, read your resume in reverse. Since your resume is written in certain bullet points, reading them starting from the end is a possibility. Do it slowly so you will easily notice certain errors and correct them as soon as possible.

4. Marking the errors – when you find an error on your resume, mark it. You will be able to easily update your resume online since you have marked the things that should be changed. After applying the changes, print the resume once again and mark the errors if you still find one. You should be able to have a good looking resume after two to three reprints.

5. Have someone else proofread it – let someone else proofread your resume after you have done it yourself. A different perspective on your resume will help you not only in pointing out the errors but also in determining if the form of your resume is applicable to the job you are applying for. As the saying goes “two heads are better than one”.
