How Play can Help Your Career

Everyone wants to improve in their career. Employees do everything that they can in order to land in a better position with a good pay. Unfortunately, the idea of “doing everything” to land a better position have been misinterpreted by some employees as a license for backstabbing or destroying their fellow employees’ reputation just to be upfront in the race for promotion.

While there are those who take the better way – they work hard and improve on their productivity and they are professional in every step of the way.

If you find yourself struggling to improve in your job and you don’t want to resort to backstabbing (which is highly discouraged), there is one thing you can do – play.

It is a common idea that playing can just distract people to be better in their work. But doing things in a proper place and a proper time could utilize play to improve their employees’ productivity. Employees who are not playing or doesn’t have any interest are often distracted at work. They are often distracted by so many things since their minds could be stressed out with so many things. On the other hand, those who play or have a hobby can easily dedicate themselves better at work.

Reasons for Play or Having a Hobby

• Increase Focus on the Job – As we have already indicated, thinking too much of your job could easily stress you out. You need an outlet to release those tensions in your job. Playing or having a hobby could easily release these tensions. Activities outside work that requires physical exertion is recommended since blood circulation is increased and muscle tensions are addressed. Since your mind is free from tension and stress, you can focus on your job more.

• Enhance Creativity – Playing or having a hobby can also boost your creativity. At work, there are always problems that should be tackled everyday. Without mental preparation or a view from other sources, the ideas are limited and they are usually focused on what was already used. In a rapidly changing environment, what used to work might not be applicable anymore. Your hobby easily helps you in having a fresh perspective on certain things since you have been working in a different field other than your work.

• Foster Balance of Work and Personal Life – There is an idea that persons who are dedicated to their hobbies could be easily distracted at work. This is not true as persons who have a hobby are usually satisfied with what they have done in their hobby and would move on their career. They can easily move back and forth from their work and home without jeopardizing each other.

• Improve on Certain Skills – There are times that your hobby could become profitable and an asset for the company. Improving in your hobby could easily help you improve on other things especially at work since you have found confidence in your career.

Never disregard your hobby completely for work. By properly utilizing your time at home and work, not only your are improving in your career but also your personal life.
